USDOT Unveils V2X Plan To Improve Road Safety Nationwide

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has taken a bold step toward reducing traffic fatalities with vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology, as discussed in Saving Lives with Connectivity: A Plan to Accelerate V2X Deployment. This V2X Plan aims to bring cutting-edge vehicle-to-everything technologies to roads nationwide and support USDOT's commitment to achieving zero roadway deaths.

The V2X form was initially introduced as a draft for public comment last October. These technologies enable vehicles and wireless devices to communicate with each other and surrounding infrastructure. When fully rolled out, this technology has the capability to prevent serious and fatal car accidents.

What exactly is V2X technology?

V2X allows cars to "talk" to one another and nearby infrastructure, such as traffic lights or road signs. For example, it could warn drivers of an impending collision before it happens or exactly when a green light will turn red.

How does the V2X Plan support the Safe System Approach?

The V2X Plan is closely tied to USDOT's National Roadway Safety Strategy, launched in January 2022 to tackle the alarming number of roadway deaths. By embracing V2X technology, USDOT aims to create a transportation system that anticipates errors and mitigates harm.

Beyond safety, V2X technology is important in improving road mobility and efficiency. Vehicles communicating with one another and with traffic systems can minimize congestion, reduce emissions, and even create a smoother experience for all road users.

What did USDOT officials say about the V2X Plan?

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg endorses the transformative potential of the V2X Plan. "The Department has reached a key milestone today in laying out a national plan for the transportation industry that has the power to save lives and transform the way we travel," Buttigieg said. "The Department recognizes the potential safety benefits of V2X, and this plan will move us closer to nationwide adoption of this technology."

Dr. Robert C. Hampshire, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology, also stressed the plan's collaborative nature. It provides stakeholders with vital information to enable a safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation system through the national, widespread deployment of interoperable V2X technologies, said Hampshire.

These partnerships will be key in expanding V2X's "market certainty" and ensuring its widespread deployment.

How is USDOT investing in V2X technology?

Recently, the Federal Highway Administration announced nearly $60 million in grants to further the deployment of V2X technologies. These grants will help test and promote V2X communication and ensure the connected technologies work securely and without interference.

The funding signals a serious commitment to bringing V2X's lifesaving potential to fruition while ensuring it operates smoothly across different platforms and devices. With this financial push, USDOT aims to fuel research and deployment, making V2X a concept and a reality for everyday drivers.
